The first veterans pinning ceremony I attended was during my second week with Chaplaincy. This patient is mostly non-verbal but when his pin was pinned on his chest, he had tears of pride falling down his cheeks. It was at that time I decided that I wanted to make lap quilts for the veterans. His was the first one I made and when I gave it to him and placed it on his lap he again had tears running down his cheeks. I told him I was not trying to make him cry, I just wanted to honor him and thank him for serving our country. He gave me a hug and made it all worth it.
I was visiting a patient that I had been seeing for about 2 months when I noticed a picture on her wall. In the picture was her son and grandchildren. I looked closer and realized that the patient’s grandson was married to my niece. However, because of HIPPA requirements I was not able to say anything to my niece about it. Her grandson had not spoken to my patient since his parents got divorced which in turn, he had not spoken to my patient either. My patient made one of her goals to reconnect with her grandson. I encouraged her to call her grandson. It was right before Christmas when she did reach out to him, and they are talking about once a month and she said, “it’s a start”.
