How Do I Know if My Child Needs Support?
Every child grieves differently. Some may talk openly about the death of their loved one, while others may say very little or show no outward signs at all. Even when children appear to be “doing fine,” questions and feelings often surface later, and they may need a safe outlet to explore their grief.
Signs that a child may be experiencing grief include:
- Nervousness or worry
- Nightmares or recurring dreams
- Withdrawal, sadness, or loss of interest in activities
- Difficulty concentrating (especially at school)
- Hyperactivity or restlessness
- Anger or uncontrollable outbursts
- Increased dependency on one caregiver or person
- Physical complaints or frequent illness
Whether or not these signs are present, children benefit from having supportive spaces to talk, play, create, and process their grief in ways that feel natural to them.
How Services Work
At Cork’s Place, children and teens are placed in age-appropriate groups. Each group runs as a five-week series, meeting every other week for one hour (a total of five sessions).
Sessions begin in our group Circle Room, a safe and welcoming space for sharing and transition. Afterward, children can explore our themed activity rooms, always accompanied by trained adult facilitators. These spaces allow kids to process their grief in developmentally appropriate ways through play, music, art, movement, or conversation.
Easy Access to Services
Cork’s Place is a self-referral program; no doctor’s note, counselor referral, or outside paperwork is required. Families can reach out directly whenever they feel ready, and our team will walk them through the simple intake and registration process.
Cost of Services
No child or family is ever turned away due to cost. Thanks to grants, fundraising events, and generous donors, Cork’s Place services are offered free of charge.
Families who wish to contribute may make a tax-deductible donation to help sustain our work.
